29TH & GROVE UNION PACIFIC SITE
The site is located in Wichita, Kansas, bounded on the north by East 37th Street, on the south by Murdock Street, on the west by Hydraulic Street, and on the east by North Hillside Street. The site is owned by Union Pacific and occupies approximately 20 acres.
Groundwater and soil in the area that the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has designated the “29th and Grove Site” is heavily contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals spilled at the Union Pacific Railroad site railyard. The spilled chemical, trichloroethene (TCE), was used as a degreaser to clean metal.
"KDHE is still researching, but the original chemical spill could have been back in the 1970s. We know it was discovered in 1994. And we know that the levels of contamination are 200 times higher than the safe levels,” said State Representative K.C. Ohaebosin at a news conference held on Oct. 5.
The TCE contamination was discovered in 1994 when the city began development of the 21st Street Corridor from Interstate 135 to Grove Street. KDHE first began an investigation in 1999 and confirmed the chemical originated from a spill at the Union Pacific rail yard.
1-800-LAW-FIRM is an advocate and leader in the fight to protect the public from contaminated drinking water. A recent study of public water supplies found unsafe levels of chemicals in the water consumed every day by 6 million people. Unfortunately, that number represents only the tip of the iceberg when you factor in the number of people whose water was not tested as part of the study, including those who consume contaminated water from private wells, or people whose water is at risk of being contaminated.
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with cancer after consuming well water in the affected area you may be eligible to file a claim. Furthermore, because TCE readily vaporizes, you may have been exposed to the contamination by TCE vapors that rose up through the soil into your home, work, or school.
